Question/Problem Description
Server crashes and the "SQLException: The target principal name is incorrect.  Cannot generate SSPI context." error is present in the error log files.
Steps to ReproduceConnect to a database using Integrated security(Windows User account) that has an expired password.
Clarifying Information
The "Cannot generate SSPI context." is a generic error.
 
Error MessageMessage : The target principal name is incorrect. Cannot generate SSPI context.
Defect/Enhancement Number
Cause
1. Outdated/expired password.
2. Clock Drift, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock_drift
3. Active Directory access permissions.
4. Failure to register SPN(Service Principal Name).
Resolution

Workaround
Switching from Windows Authentication to SQL Server Authentication will bypass the error as logins are created in SQL Server level and are not based on Windows user accounts.
